Mozilla 1.6

[Other Mail Clients]

This document illustrates how to set up Mozilla Mail for use with Courier IMAP. It assumes that an account called mike has already been created on the server for the domain karmak.org, and a password has been set. In all examples that follow, you should substitute your own account and domain (you@yourdomain.com) for those shown.

Note: These instructions will not work with versions of Mozilla below 1.6. Please check for documentation on other versions if you do not have 1.6.

Instructions

Start Mozilla Mail. If you have opened up the Mozilla browser, you can start the mail program by clicking the envelope icon in the bottom left corner.

Once Mozilla Mail has started, select Edit -> Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings....

You will see a new window like the following. Click Add Account....

The Account Wizard will now appear. Choose Email account and press Next.

Enter the name and email address for the account you are creating, then press Next.

Choose IMAP for the server type, enter your domain name for Incoming Server, then press Next.

Note: If this is your first time running Mozilla, you may also be prompted for your Outgoing Server. If you know the name of your ISPs Outgoing Server (e.g. smtp.comcast.net or mail.bellsouth.net), you should use that since it will be faster. Otherwise, enter your domain name again for Outgoing Server. [If you don't see any box for Outgoing Server, you can ignore this note.]

Enter the the full email address of the account you are creating for User Name, then click Next.

Enter the the full email address of the account you are creating for Account Name, then click Next.

Press Finish.

You will now be returned to the Account Settings window. Select Server Settings from the menu, then click the Advanced... button.

Set the advanced values exactly as shown below, then click OK. (Note: The word INBOX is all-caps and is followed by a period (.).

Now select Composition & Addressing. If you do not have a need to send HTML email (most people do not, and it generally just irritates the people you are sending mail to), you should uncheck the box labeled Compose messages in HTML format.

Select Outgoing Server, and see if your domain name is listed in the Server Name field. If your domain name is not already listed here, and something else is, skip this step and just click OK. If your domain name is already listed here, of if all the fields are blank, enter the values as shown below and click OK.

You should now be back to the Mozilla Mail window, and you will see the new account you created. Click Inbox to read your mail. (You will be prompted for your password; note that you must set in advance on the server. You will not be able to log in until you have set your password.)

A Note on Outgoing Port: Many ISPs are blocking outgoing (SMTP) port 25. If you get everything configured properly but still cannot send mail, try setting the outgoing port to "587".
