Doesn't that suck...
Overzealous copyright laws are hurting us all. In the past several years, what used to be considered "fair use" (such as creating a public archive like this) is now considered copyright violation by lawyers and other greedy individuals who threaten prosecution at the drop of a hat.
Furthermore, copyright terms have been extended on several occasions, and now span over 100 years. Under current laws, many works published in the year 2000 may not enter the public domain until after the year 2150. As if this were not bad enough, powerful copyright lobbyists have succeeded in getting copyright terms extended on every occasion that they have tried, and there is no reason to suspect that they will have difficulty getting more extensions in the future.
Unless there is a strong public backlash against copyrights, there may soon be a time when artistic creations and other publications never enter the public domain. This was certainly not the intent of copyright laws, but the laws have been hijacked by large corporations and wealthy individuals with strong political influence. They have been made draconian, harsh, and unfair. Extortionist fines of thousands of dollars have been applied for accidental copyright violations, and with the passing of the DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act), prison is now a possibility for even minor infractions.
All of society should benefit from the creative works of its members, for without the infrastructure that society provides, these members would not have the opportunity to be creative in the first place. But because we've lost control our copyright laws, a fraction of our society is attempting a virtual "land grab" in hopes that they will be able to secure a life of leisure at everyone else's expense.
If you care about the creative and scientific future of our society, do your part to oppose copyright laws, legally or otherwise. Fight these laws in any way possible. Only through strong activism and resistance can we hope to prevail against the forces that seek to control and restrict all of human knowledge.
